The Lagos State Government has sealed 13 markets and commercial facilities in the Ketu and Ikorodu axis for persistent environmental violations and failure to comply with sanitation regulations.
EpeInsights gathered that the enforcement, carried out by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), follows multiple warnings ignored by market operators and traders.
Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, said the move is part of the state’s Zero Tolerance for Waste campaign aimed at restoring cleanliness and protecting public health.
Markets and facilities affected are; Erukan Market, Oja Oba Market, Ketu; Owoseni Tundas Market; Oba Ogunjobi Market; Shops at BRT Terminal, Mile 12; Ketu Terminal Market (6 plazas); Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market; Demurin Street Plaza Shops; Occupant, 6 Demurin Road, Ketu; Ifelodun Market, Ketu; Ibadan Unit 1 Park; Ketu Tipper Garage; Ikosi Fruit Market.

Wahab emphasized that reopening will only occur once the markets adopt proper sanitation measures, possess appropriate waste bins, engage LAWMA-licensed PSP operators and demonstrate consistent environmental compliance.
LAWMA CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, called on market leaders to take full ownership of sanitation efforts in their spaces.
“Traders must stop dumping waste on roadsides and medians. Markets need to activate internal waste policing and pay their waste bills. Continued defiance will attract stiffer penalties,” he warned.
Gbadegesin added that while LAWMA deploys massive resources daily to evacuate waste across Lagos, poor waste practices within markets continue to undermine progress.
He assured that the agency remains committed to working with stakeholders to achieve a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
