The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, led dignitaries at the July Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise in Ibeju-Lekki, joining the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, in championing a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
Epe Insights reports that the sanitation exercise, held in Eputu Community, also attracted the wife of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), government officials, traditional rulers, environmental stakeholders, and residents.
The presence of the First Lady, the wife of the Deputy Governor, and COWLSO members highlighted the Lagos State Government’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and community participation in keeping the state clean.
Addressing participants, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu stressed that environmental cleanliness should not be limited to monthly sanitation exercises but embraced as a daily responsibility by every resident.
She urged families, community leaders, market associations, and businesses to take ownership of their surroundings, noting that collective action remains the foundation for healthier and safer communities.
The First Lady said a clean environment protects public health, improves the quality of life, and helps reduce environmental challenges such as flooding and indiscriminate waste disposal.
She encouraged residents to support government initiatives by adopting proper waste management practices and maintaining clean homes, streets, and public spaces.
Also participating in the exercise, Dr. Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, joined residents in promoting environmental responsibility and reinforcing the importance of community collaboration in achieving a cleaner Lagos.
Members of COWLSO also actively participated in the sanitation exercise, demonstrating their continued support for programmes that promote healthy living, environmental awareness, and community development across Lagos State.
Their participation further strengthened public awareness of the need for collective responsibility in preserving the environment and maintaining cleaner neighbourhoods.
Leading the local effort, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa described the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise as a key component of his administration’s environmental agenda.
According to Olowa, the initiative extends beyond routine cleaning and reflects the local government’s commitment to promoting environmental consciousness and responsible waste disposal throughout Ibeju-Lekki.
He explained that the council remains focused on building a culture where residents, businesses, community leaders, and stakeholders actively participate in protecting their environment.
Olowa reiterated that sustainable development begins with clean and healthy communities, adding that environmental responsibility must become a shared value among residents.
The chairman expressed appreciation to Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, members of COWLSO, traditional rulers, government officials, and other dignitaries for supporting the sanitation exercise.

The chairman urged residents to sustain the momentum by making cleanliness a daily habit rather than limiting it to the monthly sanitation programme.
He advised households and business owners to dispose of waste responsibly, keep drainage channels free of refuse, and support approved waste management systems.
Environmental experts have consistently emphasised that regular sanitation exercises help reduce pollution, improve public health, and minimise the risk of flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
The successful exercise concluded with a renewed call for stronger collaboration between government and residents in protecting the environment.
With the active participation of the First Lady, the wife of the Deputy Governor, COWLSO members, and the leadership of Hon.
