The Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET) emerged victorious at a highly competitive inter-institutional debate hosted by Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo Campus.
EpeInsights learnt that the debate was organised by the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN), Lagos Chapter, and focused on the motion: “A Female President in Nigeria Will Accelerate Progress.” LASCOHET’s team argued against the motion — and did so with such persuasive skill and clarity that they secured first place, besting participants from other tertiary institutions across the state.
Two 100-level students represented the college: Esther Oduma from the Department of Community Health and Abomide Khadijat from Environmental Health Technology. Their poise, research depth, and articulate delivery won them accolades and brought pride to the institution.
In the aftermath of the debate, the leadership of NFSAN (Lagos Chapter), led by Chairperson Comrade Titilayo Ekundayo, paid a courtesy visit to LASCOHET. During the visit, Ekundayo presented a formal proposal to the College’s Provost, Professor Raheem Akewushola, who was represented by the Deputy Provost (Academics), Dr. Olaronke Agoro.
The proposal outlines a student-led initiative aimed at strengthening awareness and prevention of sexual assault within tertiary institutions. It focuses on sensitizing both students and faculty to the importance of fostering safe, inclusive academic environments, while addressing sexual harassment and gender-based violence.
Both the debate and the proposal presentation were part of LASU’s activities commemorating International Women’s Day, underscoring the role of women in leadership, education, and social advocacy.
As part of the event, LASCOHET also received a Participation Award in recognition of its contributions to national discourse and gender equality.
This victory not only highlights the academic excellence of the institution but also reinforces its commitment to shaping socially responsible future health professionals.
