Two of Lagos State’s respected figures, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) and Otunba Olufemi Pedro were honoured on Thursday with Honorary Doctorate degrees from Lagos State University (LASU), celebrating decades of distinguished service and visionary leadership.
At the institution’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, Marwa, former Military Administrator of Lagos State and current Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his contributions to infrastructure, security, and national development.
Pedro, a respected economist and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, was conferred a Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa) for his impact in banking, entrepreneurship, and national development.
Reacting to the honours, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the recipients as “visionary leaders whose work continues to shape Lagos and Nigeria.”
“These awards are not just ceremonial, they reflect the far-reaching legacies of two men whose public service has changed lives and improved systems.” Sanwo-Olu said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile.
Marwa’s legacy, particularly during his time as Military Administrator of Lagos, includes transformative programmes like Operation 250 Roads and Operation Sweep, which laid a strong foundation for urban renewal and safer communities.
Pedro, a key figure in Lagos’ economic evolution, was instrumental in significantly growing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) during his tenure as deputy to then-Governor Bola Tinubu now President of Nigeria.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that their recognition by LASU is a proud moment for Lagos, symbolizing the power of dedicated service and innovation in governance.
“Your leadership continues to inspire a new generation of change-makers. These honours reflect not only your past achievements but the values you uphold,” the Governor added.
As LASU celebrates its continued rise as a centre of academic excellence, the conferment of these doctorates stands as a reminder that leadership grounded in purpose, vision, and integrity leaves a lasting legacy.
