In a bold step towards improving women’s health in Epe Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, FHTI, recently organized a free cervical cancer screening for residents—a move that has been widely commended as timely and life-saving.

EpeInsights learnt that the screening, which drew a large number of participants, was part of the Chairman’s ongoing health intervention programmes aimed at increasing access to preventive care and raising awareness about cervical cancer, a major threat to women’s health globally.

According to a report, ten women tested positive during the exercise.

In her response, Hon. Animashaun expressed concern over the findings but quickly reassured the affected individuals of the local government’s full support.

“I am deeply concerned about the number of positive cases detected, However, I am encouraged by the proactive steps our women are taking to prioritize their health. As a government, we are committed to providing full support, including covering the complete cost of treatment for those affected.”

The Chairman emphasized that the local government would shoulder the entire treatment expenses, ensuring that none of the beneficiaries face financial hardship while accessing care.

“You will receive the best possible care without bearing the cost. We are here for you every step of the way.” She added.

Health professionals at the event underscored the importance of regular cervical cancer screenings, stressing that early detection of abnormal changes in cervical cells can drastically improve outcomes and, in many cases, prevent the disease altogether.

Many attendees lauded the initiative, describing it as a crucial intervention that came at the right time. One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Shakirat Adewunmi, expressed her gratitude:

“This screening gave me the chance to check something I had long ignored. I’m truly grateful to our Chairman for prioritizing women’s health.”

The success of the initiative is expected to boost awareness across the community and encourage more women to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.

It also highlights Hon. Animashaun’s administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting the well-being of residents in Epe.
