Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has empowered 1,700 vulnerable residents with life-changing start-up capital and working tools through the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI).
EpeInsights reports that the program, which aims to uplift economically disadvantaged individuals, was launched under the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The initiative, designed to foster entrepreneurship and improve socio-economic wellbeing, seeks to equip vulnerable Lagosians with modern skills in various trades, offering them the tools to create sustainable livelihoods and foster economic independence.
The graduation ceremony, held at De Blue Roof in Agidingbi on Tuesday, was a momentous occasion, marking the successful completion of an extensive entrepreneurial program by the beneficiaries.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his remarks, emphasized that MESI is a vital intervention by his administration to address the root causes of poverty, particularly within marginalized communities.
“This is a deliberate, bottom-up action being taken to uplift communities. If a household is empowered, it creates a ripple effect, positively impacting families, local governments, and ultimately the entire state,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu further revealed that nearly N10 billion had been invested in various interventions aimed at boosting skill development and economic empowerment for vulnerable residents.
He expressed his hope that the provision of start-up capital and working tools would enable beneficiaries to establish strong income bases and alleviate household poverty.
“We believe that the skills and resources you now possess will set you on a path to success. This is not just about financial support but about enabling you to build businesses that will contribute to the growth of Lagos State,” the Governor added.
The initiative is a significant boost to the informal sector, which plays a crucial role in the state’s economy.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his commitment to continuous investment in entrepreneurship and skill development, underscoring that this intervention would create sustainable economic growth.
The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, the wife of the Deputy Governor, also lauded the success of MESI.
She described the initiative as “a shining example” of the administration’s dedication to inclusive economic growth, particularly for women.
“Through this initiative, countless women have been empowered to turn their passions into thriving businesses that sustain their families,” Dr. Sanwo-Olu said.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, the echoed similar sentiments, stating that MESI was a means to restore the dignity of the beneficiaries and help them transition from dependency to self-sufficiency.
“This is not just about providing resources; it’s about instilling a sense of independence and dignity,” she said.
The program has already seen numerous success stories, with many beneficiaries turning their skills into successful businesses.
Despite the progress, the First Lady highlighted that much more needs to be done to close the gap of economic inequality, urging beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity to transform their lives.
The MESI initiative is part of the broader effort by the Lagos State Government to create lasting economic opportunities for residents and promote inclusive growth across all sectors.
