The Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, an affiliate of the global Wikimedia Foundation, has opened talks with the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB) to explore a strategic partnership aimed at digitizing and preserving the state’s archival records.
During a courtesy visit to LASRAB headquarters, the Wikimedia delegation, led by President of the User Group, Ambassador Olushola Olaniyan, formally presented a proposal for collaboration to the Director-General of LASRAB, Ms. Toyin Ogunlana.
The meeting focused on harnessing the power of digital platforms to make Lagos’ historical documents more accessible to the public while ensuring their long-term preservation.
Amb. Olaniyan noted that LASRAB’s role as the custodian of authentic and verifiable historical records makes it an ideal partner for the Wikimedia movement, which is committed to expanding global access to knowledge.
“This partnership aims not only to preserve Lagos State’s history but also to make it widely available to the world, especially younger generations and researchers,” he said.
The proposed collaboration will involve digitizing archival materials ranging from the pre-independence era to contemporary records, with the goal of preventing data loss and promoting transparency, cultural education, and historical awareness.
Ms. Ogunlana welcomed the proposal, stating that it aligns with LASRAB’s mission to promote the preservation and accessibility of Lagos State’s documentary heritage.
She expressed optimism about the potential impact of the partnership on public knowledge and historical research.
“By embracing digital technology, we can ensure that the rich tapestry of Lagos’ past is not only preserved but shared globally, allowing our stories to inspire and inform beyond our borders,” she added.
Both organizations agreed to initiate further technical discussions to outline the modalities of implementation, including training programs, digitization protocols, and content integration on Wikimedia platforms such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
