The Lagos State Government has revealed that the Mid-Level Agro Produce Hub located at Idi-Oro, Mushin, has recorded over N3 billion in food transactions since its launch in December 2023.

EpeInsights reports that the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, disclosed this on Tuesday during the ongoing 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa.

The briefing forms part of activities marking the sixth year in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to Olusanya, the hub—commissioned on December 17, 2023—currently operates twice weekly, offering Lagos residents access to farm-fresh produce every Wednesday and Saturday.

She emphasized that the hub is a core component of the state’s broader food system transformation agenda.

“This is the second tier of our transformation strategy. We’re already constructing three more hubs in Agege, Abijo, and Opebi to further expand access to affordable and hygienically processed food across Lagos,” she added.

Olusanya also highlighted other major agricultural projects, including the Lagos Cattle Transit Station, ranches, and the Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub in Epe, describing them as clear evidence of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to agricultural reform and food security.

With Lagos’ population projected to reach 24 million by 2030, the Commissioner warned of a widening food supply gap. “By 2030, food demand in Lagos is estimated to hit N7.96 trillion per annum.

At current output levels, we’d have to import about N3.38 trillion worth of food each year unless we ramp up local production by at least 20% annually to achieve 40% self-sufficiency,” she explained.

The Commissioner listed several impactful initiatives that have been rolled out over the years to support farmers and boost productivity. These include:

She also highlighted youth-targeted programmes such as the Lagos Agric Scholars Programme (LASP), Agrinnovation Club, Agrithon Fund, and the Eko Flavours Competition, designed to engage young people in agriculture.Over N3 Billion in Transactions Recorded at Mushin Food Hub – Lagos Commissioner

Infrastructure development remains a cornerstone of the ministry’s efforts. The state has constructed 13km of farm access roads, six jetties, and 15 cottage processing centres under the APPEALS and Lagos CARES projects, in partnership with the World Bank.

Additional programmes include the Urban Farming Initiative, Lagos Food Festival, Eko Agro Mechanisation Project, the Aquaculture Production and Processing Centre (LACE), and the Lagos Agripreneurship Programme, all aimed at building a sustainable, inclusive, and productive agricultural ecosystem.
