The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), in collaboration with the Saving One Million Lives Programme for Results (SOML PforR), has conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop for heads of medical laboratory services across the state, focusing on Quality Management Systems (QMS) and safety procedures.

EpeInsights reports that the workshop brought together 60 laboratory heads from all 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State and was held from April 15 to 16 at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

Delivering the opening remarks on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, the Director of Medical Laboratory Services noted that the initiative was designed to strengthen the operational standards of medical laboratories through knowledge sharing and practical guidance on quality and safety protocols.

“This training is aimed at empowering participants with tools to implement effective quality management systems, enforce safety procedures, and ensure alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards,” Dr. Mustafa stated.

Key objectives of the workshop are; enhancing participants’ understanding of QMS and its application in routine laboratory operations, promoting best practices in laboratory safety, biosecurity, and risk management as well as preparing laboratories for regulatory compliance and future accreditation.

Dr. Mustafa highlighted that the training is part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare outcomes in Lagos through high-quality diagnostic services, supported by ongoing investments in human capacity under the SOML PforR programme.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Pharm. Shakirat Adeosun, emphasized the life-saving role of accurate diagnostics and encouraged attendees to adopt and institutionalize quality assurance systems in their daily work.

“In a state like Lagos, where the demand for accurate medical diagnostics is high, integrating quality and safety in laboratory practices is not optional—it is essential,” she said. She urged participants to actively engage, ask questions, and seek clarity to ensure full understanding of the life-impacting responsibilities they hold.

Topics covered during the training included laboratory safety and biosecurity, biological containment practices, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and occupational health and safety protocols.

The initiative marks a significant step in the State Government’s commitment to elevating the standard of primary healthcare delivery, with a focus on patient safety, quality diagnostics, and professional accountability.
