In a decisive step to preserve peace and unity in Ibeju-Lekki and surrounding communities, the Lagos State Government has urged residents to remain calm amid growing tensions over unauthorized Baale installations and boundary disputes.

EpeInsights learnt that traditional rulers and key community leaders gathered at a stakeholder meeting held on Thursday in Alausa, Ikeja, at the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, where the Honourable Commissioner, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert, issued a strong warning against any breach of chieftaincy laws.

“We cannot sit back while conflict brews in our communities,” Robert stated. “The installation of Baales must follow due process and respect the authority of the reigning Obas. Any appointments made outside the proper channels are not only unlawful—they are unacceptable.”

The meeting, also attended by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, addressed concerns raised in recent petitions and social media reports. The Commissioner emphasized that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of traditional institutions while promoting peace across the state.

Robert directed that individuals claiming the title of Baale without official approval must stop immediately, noting that the state will not recognize any chieftaincy titles that do not comply with established legal frameworks.

In response, traditional rulers at the meeting welcomed the government’s intervention. Speaking on their behalf, Oba Tajudeen Afolabi Elemoro thanked the state for stepping in and pledged their cooperation in maintaining peace and resolving outstanding issues.

The government is currently compiling a comprehensive report to guide further action and ensure that order is restored in all affected areas.

Also in attendance were Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman, Engineer Sesan Olowa, along with several prominent monarchs, including Oba Saka Babatunde Bakare, Oba Akeem Animashaun Ojomu, Oba Talabi Odugbesan, and others.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting both the traditions and the rule of law, calling on all community leaders to support ongoing efforts to build a peaceful and law-abiding society.
