As preparations ramp up for Hajj 2025, the Lagos State Government has rolled out free medical screening for over 1,400 intending Muslim pilgrims, thanks to the sponsorship of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

EpeInsights learnt that the initiative, organised by the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, is designed to ensure that all pilgrims from Lagos are medically fit before heading to the Holy Land. The screenings are taking place across different zones in the state, with the first phase held at the Badagry Local GovernmentSecretariat for pilgrims from Badagry and Ojo LGAs.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Hon. Ibrahim Layode, explained that the health screenings are not just a gesture—they’re a requirement. According to him, anyone who fails to undergo the screening may not be cleared to travel for Hajj.

“The goal is to detect and treat any health issues early, reduce health emergencies during the pilgrimage, and ensure every pilgrim is in top condition before embarking on this spiritual journey,” Layode said.

He praised the Sanwo-Olu administration for bringing the services closer to the people by decentralizing the screening process.

Layode also urged the intending pilgrims to conduct themselves as worthy ambassadors of Lagos State, and to remember to pray for the state, Governor Sanwo-Olu, President Bola Tinubu, and Nigeria while in Saudi Arabia.

In his remarks, Mr. AbdulHakeem Ajomagberin, Secretary of the Lagos Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, highlighted that physical fitness is one of the core requirements for Hajj, and this initiative supports that.

“We want our pilgrims to stay healthy, live well, and return safely. This screening is a key part of that process,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr. Mezeedat Erinosho from the Lagos Ministry of Health described the screenings as part of a wider campaign to promote a health-conscious culture among Lagosians.

“We’re using this opportunity to educate people, encourage vaccinations, and provide a complete health check. It’s more than just a Hajj requirement—it’s a public health move,” she said.LASG Sponsors Free Health Checks for 1,400 Lagos Pilgrims Ahead of 2025 Hajj

Pilgrims Share Their Gratitude

Many of the pilgrims expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Alfa Tajudeen Folorunso said the experience was smooth and well-organized. “The doctors were caring and thorough. It’s amazing that the government is doing this for free.”

Mrs. Kafayat Kelani echoed his sentiment: “We were expecting to pay between ₦50,000 and ₦100,000 for the medical checks, but the government covered it all. We’re really thankful.”

The Lagos State Government continues to urge all intending pilgrims to participate in the free screening and take advantage of the care being provided to ensure a safe, stress-free Hajj experience.
