As Christians around the world commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ this Easter, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has called on residents of Lagos to uphold environmental consciousness and ensure proper waste disposal throughout the festive period and beyond.

EpeInsights quotes LAGESC Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd) as emphasising the importance of using the Easter celebration as a time to reflect not only on the values of Christ but also on collective responsibility towards a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

“Easter is a time of renewal and hope. As we celebrate, let us also be mindful of our environment. We urge Lagosians to dispose of their refuse properly through approved PSP operators and avoid littering our streets,” he said.

In a statement released from the Agency’s Command Headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi, Major Cole also issued a strong warning to individuals engaging in street trading and indiscriminate waste disposal, including those erecting illegal structures on road setbacks, medians, kerbs, and gutter slabs—actions that violate Lagos State environmental laws.

He stated that defaulters will be apprehended and prosecuted, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on activities that degrade the urban environment.

“We are reading the riot act to all those violating environmental standards. Illegal trading, encroachment on public spaces, and dumping refuse indiscriminately will not be tolerated. Offenders will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.

The Corps Marshal also used the opportunity to advocate for pedestrian safety, urging Lagos residents to use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing highways.

He noted the rise in “hit and run” incidents, many of which are preventable if citizens use available infrastructure.

“We continue to lose lives unnecessarily. Pedestrian bridges are built for your safety—use them,” he stressed.

Reaffirming LAGESC’s commitment to a cleaner and safer Lagos, Major Cole said the agency’s operatives would remain on duty during and after the Easter celebrations to ensure compliance and take necessary enforcement actions.

“Our officers are on the ground to ensure environmental laws are upheld. We remain committed to supporting the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda by maintaining a clean and habitable environment that supports business and quality living.”

The agency’s call for environmental responsibility comes as part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to promote sustainable urban living during festive periods and throughout the year.
