The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has sounded a fresh alarm over the increasing number of rickety vehicles plying the city’s roads, urging residents to prioritize their safety by avoiding such dangerous means of transport.
EpeInsights reports that the warning comes after VIS operatives impounded several worn-out and mechanically unfit vehicles across different parts of Lagos during an ongoing enforcement drive.
According to the Director of VIS, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, many of the seized vehicles were in shockingly poor condition — with expired tyres, faulty brakes, rusted body parts, and patchwork repairs that make them a hazard to everyone on the road.
“These vehicles are not just old — they are disasters waiting to happen,” he said. “Some are barely holding together, yet they are still being used to carry passengers around the city, especially at night.”

Engr. Fashola disclosed that he personally led the apprehension of one such vehicle during the exercise, describing it as “a complete breakdown of safety standards.” He stressed that most of these vehicles would not be returned to the roads, adding that the VIS is working closely with transport unions to clamp down on unroadworthy vehicles in commercial operation.
He encouraged Lagosians to take their safety seriously and avoid boarding any vehicle that looks structurally unsound or appears to be in a state of disrepair.
“If a bus looks like it might fall apart any moment, don’t take the risk. Your life is worth more than a fare,” he advised.
Residents are also encouraged to report any sightings of rickety vehicles via info@dvis.lg.gov.ng or through the Ministry of Transportation hotlines: 09020004000 and 09020009000.
The VIS says it remains committed to ensuring Lagos roads are safer for all users, with ongoing enforcement operations across the city.
