The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has applauded the outstanding performances of Lagos athletes at the just-concluded 2025 African Senior Weightlifting Championships.

EpeInsights reports that the event was held in Moka, Mauritius.

Director-General of LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, received the triumphant athletes at the Commission’s headquarters inside Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, where they presented their medals and shared highlights from their victorious outing.

Fatodu described the medal haul as a testament to the state’s growing investment in sports excellence.

Among the star performers were Onome Omolola Didih, who bagged three gold medals in the 55kg category (snatch, clean & jerk, and overall), earning the title of Best Women’s Lifter at the Championships, and Onome Omolola Didih,  who clinched two silver medals and one bronze in the 67kg category.

Together with other Nigerian team members, the Lagos-based weightlifters powered the country to a remarkable 18-medal sweep — 13 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze — underscoring Lagos’ dominance in national weightlifting representation.

Fatodu, beaming with pride, commended the athletes’ discipline and excellence, and emphasized that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to nurturing sporting talents and creating pathways for athletes to achieve global recognition.LSSC Commends Lagos Athletes over Victory at 2025 African Senior Weightlifting Championship

“Lagos will continue to lead in talent development across all sports. These athletes have made us proud, and we’re doubling down on providing resources, modern training equipment, and expert coaching to take them even further,” Fatodu said.

He also noted that the state is preparing intensively for the 22nd National Sports Festival—tagged the Gateway Games—to be held next month in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where Lagos is targeting a dominant outing in weightlifting and other disciplines.

The athletes, in return, expressed gratitude to the LSSC for its continuous support and motivation, pledging to remain focused, train harder, and bring more glory to Lagos and Nigeria.
