Lagos residents can expect temporary access to the Independence Bridge starting Sunday, as the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, has assured that the bridge will reopen to motorists for two weeks before further structural assessments and permanent restoration begin.
Epe Insights learnt that during an emergency visit to the construction site, Umahi revealed that President Bola Tinubu had ordered urgent intervention to ease traffic congestion and alleviate the suffering of commuters.
The Minister condemned the unauthorized closure of the road, emphasizing that all future road shutdowns must receive approval through the Permanent Secretary’s office. He cautioned controllers and engineers nationwide to adhere to this directive to avoid disruptions to the public movement.
Expressing confidence in the contractor handling the project, Umahi stated that construction work would continue day and night to ensure a swift and effective redesign.

He also commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his proactive steps in managing traffic flow around the Independence Bridge corridor.
“This reopening will provide temporary relief for Lagos motorists, with long-term structural solutions set to follow after the initial two-week period.” He stated.
