Lagos Charts Digital Future for Tertiary Institutions at Annual Higher Education Retreat

The Lagos State Government is moving towards digital transformation in education, as it reaffirmed commitment to revolutionizing the management of its tertiary institutions. This was the central theme of the annual retreat organized by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, which brought together principal officers and senior managers from Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions.

Epe Insights reports that the retreat was held under the theme of innovation and digital advancement, serving as a strategic platform for institutional leaders to explore fresh approaches to navigating the complexities of the 21st-century digital economy.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, opened the retreat with a powerful call to action, urging institutions to embrace technology as a transformative tool. He highlighted the retreat as an opportunity for knowledge-sharing, inter-institutional collaboration, and creative problem-solving in response to modern-day challenges in higher education.

“We are fully committed to providing the necessary support to empower our institutions to thrive in the digital age,” Mr. Sule stated. “This retreat is not just a meeting—it’s a blueprint for the future of higher education in Lagos.”

A major highlight of the event was the keynote address by Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos. Professor Ogundipe laid out a compelling roadmap for overcoming infrastructural gaps, funding issues, and talent development in tertiary education. He called for strategic partnerships, continuous capacity building, and adaptability as cornerstones for innovation and academic excellence.

“To stay relevant and competitive, our institutions must evolve rapidly—by embracing innovation, investing in people, and building strong networks both locally and internationally,” Professor Ogundipe said.

Adding depth to the conversation, Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the importance of industrial harmony. He emphasized that a peaceful and productive work environment is crucial for institutional growth and long-term sustainability in the sector.

This year’s retreat clearly reflects the Lagos State Government’s determination to lead a digital transformation agenda across all tiers of education. With a focus on strategic planning, human capital development, and collaborative innovation, the state is positioning its tertiary institutions to become engines of economic growth and drivers of digital excellence.
