LASG Flags Off IMPACT Project to Strengthen Primary Healthcare Delivery, Target 27 Centres For Upgrade

The Lagos State Government has commenced the upgrade of 27 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state under the Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project, with completion scheduled within the next three to four months.

Epe Insights gathered that the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, gave the assurance during the official handover ceremony of the PHC upgrade project held recently at Palm Avenue Primary Health Centre in Mushin.

Speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, Abayomi said the state government—working in collaboration with the World Bank and other partners—is committed to delivering the project efficiently and on time.

According to him, the IMPACT Project is designed to improve access to quality immunization and malaria services, with the broader goal of reducing under-five mortality rates in selected programme areas.

“This upgrade will enhance the capacity of our healthcare professionals to deliver essential services, reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, and improve overall public health outcomes,” he said.

He urged members of Community Development Associations (CDAs) and other stakeholders to support contractors on-site, encouraging residents to take ownership of the initiative to ensure its success and sustainability.

“We plead with residents not to obstruct the contractors’ work. Rather, support them. These upgraded facilities are for the benefit of all and must be protected,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, Hon. Emmanuel Bamigboye, described the initiative as a milestone in the collective effort to deliver accessible, quality healthcare to all Lagosians.

“Healthcare is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental right. The upgrading of these 27 PHCs demonstrates our government’s unwavering commitment to the health and wellbeing of every resident,” Bamigboye stated.

He lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his administration’s consistent investment in social and infrastructural projects, including those within the Mushin axis.

The ceremony drew attendance from several key stakeholders, including Permanent Secretaries of Health Districts I, II, V, and VI — Dr. Dayo Lajide, Dr. Olufunmilayo Bankole, Dr. Dapo Asiyanbi, and Dr. Cecilia Mabogunje. Also present were contractors, development partners, healthcare workers, and community leaders who pledged their continued support for the project.

The IMPACT Project is part of Lagos State’s broader strategy to reposition its primary healthcare system as the foundation of effective, people-centered healthcare delivery.
