The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has ordered immediate intervention in communities affected by severe flooding, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Epe Insights reports that the council chairman embarked on an extensive inspection of flood-ravaged communities on Monday to assess the level of damage and direct urgent measures to provide relief for affected residents.
The inspection began at the Ibeju-Agbe Long Bridge, where large deposits of sand had accumulated on the bridge following heavy flooding.
Hon. Olowa expressed concern over the condition of the bridge, noting that the sand deposits posed a serious danger to motorists, commuters, and other road users.
To restore safe passage, the chairman immediately directed the deployment of the Local Government’s Bobcat to clear the accumulated sand and improve access along the affected route.
The prompt directive was aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring that residents could continue to use the bridge safely despite the adverse weather conditions.
Following the inspection of the bridge, Hon. Olowa proceeded to Abule-Pan and the NNPC Road corridor, where floodwaters had disrupted movement and affected neighbouring communities.
During the visit, the chairman carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the situation to determine the immediate needs of residents and identify practical solutions to the recurring flooding.
After inspecting the affected areas, he ordered the immediate implementation of palliative measures to reduce the hardship experienced by residents while more lasting solutions are being developed.
Hon. Olowa also directed engineers to begin designing a permanent drainage system that will effectively address the persistent flooding challenges in the affected communities.
According to the chairman, the long-term drainage project is intended to improve water flow, reduce the impact of heavy rainfall, and protect public infrastructure from future damage.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to respond swiftly to environmental challenges while prioritising projects that improve safety and quality of life.
The council chairman emphasised that protecting lives and property remains a key responsibility of the local government, especially during the rainy season when flooding becomes more prevalent.
Residents who witnessed the inspection commended the chairman for personally visiting the affected communities instead of relying solely on official reports.
Many expressed appreciation for the immediate directives issued during the visit, describing the intervention as a demonstration of responsive and people-centred leadership.
Community members also welcomed plans for a permanent drainage solution, noting that recurring flooding has affected transportation, businesses, and daily activities for several years.
They expressed optimism that the proposed engineering works would provide lasting relief and improve access within the affected communities.
