The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government have reinforced their collaboration to improve road safety management and enhance traffic discipline across major routes within the council area.

Epe Insights reports that the renewed partnership followed a courtesy visit by the newly deployed FRSC Commander, Mr. K. A. Adewale, to the Executive Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, at the Council Secretariat, where both parties discussed proactive strategies for reducing road risks.

During the engagement, the FRSC emphasized the need to shift from reactive enforcement to preventive safety measures capable of addressing hazards before they escalate into accidents.

The Corps identified the Ibeju Long Bridge as a critical safety concern, noting that proper drainage flow and unobstructed water passage are essential to maintaining safe driving conditions along the corridor.

It also raised concerns over the activities of overloaded tipper trucks operating within the axis, warning that spillage from excess materials continues to create avoidable hazards for motorists and other road users.

The FRSC further stressed that such practices contribute significantly to road deterioration and increase the likelihood of traffic incidents if not urgently addressed.

In his response, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa disclosed that the local government has commenced mobilization efforts to clear accumulated sand along the Ibeju Long Bridge using a bobcat.

He noted that the exercise would be carried out in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and would require coordinated traffic control support from the FRSC to ensure safety during the operation.

The Chairman expressed concern over rising cases of reckless driving and traffic indiscipline within the local government area, describing them as threats to public safety and order.

He emphasized that consistent enforcement and stricter consequences for repeat offenders are necessary to discourage violations and promote responsible road use.

According to him, the increasing population and expanding economic activities in Ibeju-Lekki require a stronger culture of compliance with traffic laws.

He added that road safety management must evolve beyond emergency response to include preventive strategies, behavioural correction, and sustained public awareness.

The Chairman reaffirmed the commitment of the local government to supporting FRSC operations and ensuring safer transportation corridors across all communities.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of infrastructure maintenance, environmental management, and enforcement synergy in achieving safer road networks.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the renewed partnership would lead to improved traffic discipline and reduced road hazards along key routes, including the Ibeju Long Bridge corridor.

As implementation efforts begin, residents have been encouraged to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and support ongoing safety initiatives by relevant authorities.

The collaboration between FRSC and the local government is expected to further enhance preventive enforcement measures and promote a safer driving environment across Ibeju-Lekki.
