Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on Nigerians to complement their prayers for the country with responsible citizenship, hard work and collective action toward building a united and prosperous nation.
Epe Insights reports that the Governor made the call during an interdenominational Independence Thanksgiving Service held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Lagos, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barrister Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said the anniversary offered Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey while renewing their commitment to its future.
The service was held under the theme, “A Nation of Hope, Healing and Revival,” with government officials, Christian leaders, public servants and members of the congregation gathering to pray for Nigeria’s continued progress.
The Governor acknowledged that Nigeria had experienced periods of progress as well as difficult national challenges since independence. He, however, said the country’s ability to endure through adversity remained a reason for hope about its future.
According to him, Nigeria possesses significant human and natural resources capable of supporting national development. He identified the country’s youthful population, skilled manpower, creativity, entrepreneurial energy and natural wealth as important assets.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that national renewal should not be left to government alone, urging citizens, churches and other institutions to play their respective roles in building the country.
He called on Nigerians, particularly people of faith, to ensure that prayers are matched with practical actions that promote integrity, compassion, excellence and responsible citizenship.
The Governor also highlighted Lagos State’s investments in transportation, education, healthcare, security, enterprise development and environmental sustainability as examples of efforts aimed at improving the lives of residents.
He maintained that the development of Lagos and the broader aspiration for a stronger Nigeria require determination, innovation, collaboration and a shared sense of purpose.
Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to look beyond the difficulties confronting the country and actively contribute to shaping its future. He said patriotism should extend beyond Independence celebrations to everyday actions that promote social cohesion, respect for others and national development.
He also called for a renewed commitment to raising a generation that understands leadership as a responsibility and citizenship as a duty.
According to the Governor, success should not be measured only by personal achievements but also by the positive contributions individuals make to their communities and the nation.
Sanwo-Olu further expressed hope for a Nigeria where every child has an opportunity to fulfil their potential, where hard work is rewarded and where the country’s diversity becomes a source of strength rather than division.
He encouraged Nigerians to approach the future with faith, hope and courage, insisting that the country’s present challenges should not determine its ultimate destiny.
“Our best chapters are yet to be written. Let us move forward with faith, with hope and with courage, knowing that the Nigeria we desire is possible if we collectively dedicate ourselves to building and enjoying it,” he said.
The Governor also prayed for Nigeria’s leaders, communities and security personnel, asking for wisdom, courage and compassion to guide those responsible for steering the nation.
He prayed for peace, justice and prosperity across the country, while calling for greater opportunities for young Nigerians.
Speaking at the service, guest preacher Pastor Isaac Abiara also urged Nigerians to embrace truthfulness, compassion and a renewed commitment to the nation’s future.
Drawing from Isaiah 61:4, Abiara spoke about rebuilding and restoring the nation, stressing that national renewal requires the collective contribution of government, religious institutions and citizens.
He encouraged Nigerians to demonstrate greater love for one another, uphold values that promote unity and remain committed to the common good.
The cleric also urged citizens to remain hopeful despite the challenges facing the country, stressing that Nigeria’s future should be approached with faith, integrity and purposeful action.
The service ended with prayers for the nation and a renewed call for Nigerians to contribute positively to the country’s development as Nigeria marks 66 years of independence.
