The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has visited Akodo Community to assess the impact of recent flooding, reassure residents and reaffirm his administration’s commitment to delivering lasting solutions to environmental challenges.
Epe Insights reports that the chairman inspected flood-affected areas, engaged directly with residents and evaluated the extent of the damage caused by the recent downpour, while pledging prompt government intervention to improve infrastructure and reduce future flooding.
During the assessment, Hon. Olowa expressed sympathy with families and property owners affected by the flooding, acknowledging the inconvenience and losses experienced by residents.
He assured members of the community that the welfare of residents remains a top priority of his administration and that practical measures would be implemented to address the situation.
According to the chairman, the local government has already begun evaluating the affected locations to identify priority areas requiring immediate attention.
He explained that comprehensive interventions would commence after the rainy season to ensure effective and sustainable execution of drainage and road improvement projects.
Olowa disclosed that the planned intervention would focus on improving road stability and expanding drainage infrastructure to enhance water flow across flood-prone communities.
He said the project is expected to reduce the risk of recurring floods while improving accessibility and protecting public infrastructure.
The chairman noted that flooding remains a challenge in several communities due to environmental factors, rapid urban development and heavy rainfall.
He stressed that long-term solutions require a combination of improved infrastructure, proper environmental management and active community participation.
Hon. Olowa appealed to residents to support government efforts by maintaining clean surroundings and adopting responsible waste disposal practices.
He warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, waterways and unauthorised locations, describing the practice as a major contributor to flooding.
According to him, blocked drainage systems prevent the free flow of rainwater and increase the likelihood of flooding during heavy rainfall.
The chairman stated that environmental sanitation remains one of the major priorities of his administration.
He revealed that the council has continued to invest significantly in waste management and sanitation initiatives across Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.
Olowa specifically highlighted the regular evacuation of waste around Akodo General Hospital and surrounding communities as part of ongoing environmental improvement efforts.
Despite these interventions, he expressed concern that some residents continue to dispose of waste improperly, thereby undermining government efforts.
He emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility between government and members of the public.
The chairman urged community leaders, market associations, youth groups and residents to intensify awareness campaigns on proper waste management.
He encouraged households to make use of approved waste disposal channels while supporting environmental sanitation programmes organised by the local government.
