Could Hamzat’s Experience Redefine the 2027 Lagos Governorship Race?

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat has remained one of the longest-serving public office holders in Lagos politics, building a career that spans more than two decades across state and federal government.

Epe Insights reports that Hamzat began his political journey in 2005 when former Lagos State Governor and current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, appointed him Commissioner for Science and Technology. The appointment marked the beginning of a career that has seen him occupy several strategic public offices.

Following the 2007 general election, Hamzat was retained by former Governor Babatunde Fashola in the same ministry. He continued to serve as Commissioner for Science and Technology, helping to implement policies aimed at improving innovation and technology-driven governance in Lagos State.

In 2011, Hamzat was redeployed to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. He served in that capacity until 2015, overseeing major infrastructure initiatives and contributing to the state’s road and public works development.

His years as commissioner earned him recognition as one of the experienced technocrats within the Lagos political landscape. His background in engineering and public administration also strengthened his reputation as a policy-focused administrator.

Between 2015 and 2018, Hamzat stepped away from active service in the Lagos State Government. During that period, he served at the federal level, where he continued contributing to national development through public service.

In 2019, Hamzat returned to Lagos politics after being elected Deputy Governor alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The administration has since implemented programmes across transportation, education, healthcare, technology and infrastructure.

As Deputy Governor, Hamzat has represented the state at numerous official engagements while supporting policy implementation across various sectors. He has also championed initiatives designed to improve education, youth development and digital innovation.

Political observers describe Hamzat as one of the most experienced figures within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His years in public office have provided continuity across different administrations.

Over the years, Hamzat has worked with several governors while maintaining a reputation for professionalism and administrative competence. His experience spans both executive leadership and policy development.

Supporters often point to his calm approach to governance, describing him as accessible, disciplined and committed to public service. They also highlight his reputation for humility and respect in his interactions with residents and political stakeholders.

Hamzat is widely known for speaking about the importance of education, innovation and good governance. He has consistently encouraged the use of technology to improve public service delivery across Lagos State.

Many political associates also describe him as a man of faith who values integrity, accountability and service to humanity. These qualities have contributed to his public image over the years.

With discussions around the 2027 Lagos State governorship election gathering momentum, Hamzat has emerged as one of the notable figures being mentioned in political conversations.

APC Primary

If he secures his party’s ticket, wins the governorship election and serves two four-year terms, his total time in public office would extend to approximately 30 years, making him one of the state’s longest-serving political leaders.

Analysts believe his extensive experience in state administration could become a key talking point as political activities ahead of the next election continue to develop.

His record includes service under the administrations of President Bola Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos governor, former Governor Babatunde Fashola and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. That continuity has made him one of the few public officials to serve across multiple administrations in the state.

As conversations about the future leadership of Lagos continue, Hamzat’s years of experience, administrative background and long-standing involvement in governance are expected to remain central to public and political discussions.
