Epe Joins Lagos 2026 Tree Planting Exercise, Promotes a Greener Future

Epe Local Government has joined the Lagos State Government in commemorating the 2026 Tree Planting Exercise, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and a greener future for the community.

Epe Insights reports that the annual exercise was held at the Epe Local Government Secretariat under the theme, “Tree for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” with tree planting activities extending to strategic locations across the local government area.

The initiative was led by the Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Hon. Princess Surah Animashaun, who described tree planting as an important investment in environmental protection and sustainable development.

According to the Chairman, the exercise reflects the council’s determination to support initiatives that improve environmental quality while creating a healthier and cleaner community for residents.

Trees were planted within the Local Government Secretariat and other selected locations across Epe as part of efforts to increase green spaces and strengthen environmental conservation.

The annual tree planting campaign forms part of the Lagos State Government’s environmental sustainability programme aimed at promoting climate action and encouraging residents to participate in protecting the environment.

Hon. Animashaun said the exercise is not only about planting trees but also about building a lasting culture of environmental responsibility among individuals, families and communities.

She encouraged residents to embrace the habit of planting and nurturing trees, noting that every tree contributes to cleaner air, improved biodiversity and a healthier ecosystem.

The Chairman explained that trees play an essential role in reducing the effects of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality and providing shade within urban and rural communities.

She added that preserving green spaces also supports soil conservation, protects wildlife habitats and enhances the overall beauty of the environment.

Hon. Animashaun commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for sustaining the annual tree planting initiative across the state.

She described the programme as a commendable environmental policy that continues to promote sustainability while encouraging collective responsibility for environmental protection.

The Chairman noted that environmental conservation requires continuous collaboration between government institutions, private organisations and residents.

She stressed that every member of society has a role to play in protecting natural resources and ensuring a cleaner environment for future generations.

According to the council, planting trees today represents an investment that will provide environmental, economic and social benefits for many years to come.

The exercise also served as an opportunity to educate residents on the importance of caring for planted trees to ensure they grow into healthy and productive parts of the community.

Environmental experts have consistently highlighted tree planting as one of the practical measures for improving climate resilience and reducing the impact of environmental degradation.

The Epe Local Government reaffirmed its commitment to implementing programmes that support environmental sustainability and community well-being throughout the local government area.

Officials noted that environmental initiatives remain an important component of the administration’s broader development agenda aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier and more resilient Epe.

Residents who participated in the exercise expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a meaningful step toward preserving the environment for future generations.

Community leaders also encouraged schools, youth groups and community associations to participate actively in future environmental campaigns by planting and protecting more trees.

The council urged residents to take ownership of the planted trees by ensuring they are properly maintained, protected from damage and allowed to flourish.

As the 2026 Tree Planting Exercise concludes, Epe Local Government says it will continue supporting policies and programmes that promote environmental sustainability, combat climate change and strengthen community participation in building a greener and more sustainable future for Epe.
