Dredging Activities Resume in Ibeju-Lekki Under New Commitments

Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to balancing economic development with environmental sustainability following the resolution of issues surrounding dredging activities in the area.

Epe Insights reports that Hon. Olowa said the temporary suspension of dredging operations was introduced to allow the Local Government to conduct a thorough assessment of the industry’s environmental and infrastructural impact before approving the resumption of activities.

The Chairman explained that the decision was never intended to discourage legitimate businesses. Instead, it was designed to ensure that dredging operations are carried out responsibly and in a manner that protects residents, host communities and public infrastructure.

According to Hon. Olowa, creating a business-friendly environment remains a priority of his administration. He stressed that economic growth must go hand in hand with environmental protection and sustainable community development.

He noted that the dredging industry plays a significant role in the local economy by creating employment opportunities and supporting commercial activities across Ibeju-Lekki.

While acknowledging the sector’s economic importance, the Chairman maintained that operators also have a responsibility to contribute to the welfare of the communities where they conduct their activities.

He urged dredging companies to support the maintenance of roads, waterways and other public infrastructure affected by the movement of heavy equipment and daily operations.

Hon. Olowa stated that responsible corporate participation would strengthen the relationship between businesses and host communities while promoting sustainable development across the local government.

The Chairman described the relationship between government, private operators and residents as a partnership built on mutual understanding and shared responsibility.

He explained that meaningful dialogue remains one of the most effective ways of resolving environmental concerns while encouraging investment and economic progress.

According to him, cooperation among all stakeholders will help create lasting solutions that protect the environment without slowing down legitimate business activities.

Representatives of the Dredgers Association welcomed the Chairman’s approach and appreciated the opportunity to engage directly with the Local Government on issues affecting the sector.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Council in promoting responsible dredging practices and addressing environmental concerns raised by residents.

During the engagement, both parties reached several resolutions aimed at improving environmental management and strengthening public infrastructure within affected communities.

One of the major agreements reached was the commitment by dredging operators to undertake the dredging of shallow sections of Omu Creek.

The proposed work is expected to improve water inflow into the creek while enhancing navigability for communities and users who depend on the waterway.

Operators also pledged to collaborate with the Local Government on a phased improvement of roads leading to dredging locations across Ibeju-Lekki.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that business activities contribute positively to community development rather than placing additional pressure on public infrastructure.

Environmental sustainability also remained central to the discussions, with both parties agreeing that responsible dredging practices are essential to protecting natural resources and reducing environmental risks.

Hon. Olowa reiterated that the Local Government will continue monitoring dredging activities to ensure compliance with agreed standards and environmental regulations.

He assured residents that the Council would maintain regular engagement with operators while safeguarding the interests of communities across Ibeju-Lekki.

The meeting concluded with both the Local Government and the Dredgers Association reaffirming their commitment to responsible dredging, environmental sustainability, infrastructure protection and inclusive economic growth.

The renewed partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation between government and the private sector while supporting long-term development, protecting public assets and promoting a healthier environment for residents of Ibeju-Lekki.
