The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has directed that emergency flood intervention operations continue until immediate relief is achieved in affected communities.

Epe Insights reports that the Chairman gave the directive as the Council intensifies efforts to reduce flooding through coordinated emergency measures and continuous monitoring of flood-prone locations across Ibeju-Lekki.

Hon. Olowa said the ongoing intervention will not be suspended until the immediate objectives of the emergency response programme are accomplished. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to protecting residents and restoring normalcy in affected areas.

The Chairman disclosed that technical teams have been deployed to monitor the progress of the operations. According to him, the teams will assess conditions on the ground and recommend additional resources wherever they are required.

He explained that the Council remains committed to ensuring every intervention delivers the desired results. Continuous supervision, he noted, will help improve the efficiency of the emergency response and guarantee timely action where new challenges emerge.

The emergency operation follows the recent unveiling of the Council’s coordinated flood response programme, which is designed to provide immediate relief to communities experiencing flooding during the rainy season.

As part of the programme, the Council has already commenced floodwater evacuation and drainage clearance in Bogije Community. The intervention marked the first phase of a wider emergency operation planned for several flood-affected communities within the local government area.

Hon. Olowa stated that similar interventions will continue in phases across other identified locations. The phased implementation, he explained, allows the Council to deploy personnel, equipment and technical resources effectively while responding to the most pressing needs.

The Chairman assured residents that no affected community would be overlooked. He said every location captured under the emergency response programme would receive the necessary attention as operations progress.

Beyond the ongoing emergency activities, the Council is also pursuing long-term solutions to the flooding challenge. Hon. Olowa revealed that the Local Government remains in active engagement with the Lagos State Government and relevant Federal Government agencies.

According to him, the collaboration is aimed at strengthening drainage infrastructure and improving flood resilience throughout Ibeju-Lekki. He stressed that lasting solutions require cooperation among all levels of government.

The Council believes that improving drainage networks will significantly reduce the impact of heavy rainfall on homes, roads and public facilities. Upgrading critical infrastructure is expected to support sustainable environmental management across the local government.

Hon. Olowa noted that while emergency interventions provide immediate relief, permanent drainage improvements remain essential for addressing recurring flooding in rapidly developing communities.

The Chairman reiterated his administration’s determination to adopt practical and sustainable measures that will improve environmental safety and reduce the risks associated with seasonal flooding.

He also acknowledged the patience and understanding shown by residents since the commencement of the emergency operations. According to him, public cooperation has contributed positively to the smooth implementation of the response programme.

The Council encouraged residents to continue supporting the intervention by observing proper environmental sanitation practices. Keeping drainage channels free from refuse and other obstructions will complement the government’s ongoing efforts.

Residents were also advised to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rainfall and report blocked drainage channels or emerging flood concerns to the appropriate authorities for prompt attention.

Environmental experts have consistently emphasised that routine drainage maintenance and early intervention remain among the most effective strategies for reducing urban flooding, especially in fast-growing communities such as Ibeju-Lekki.

The ongoing response demonstrates the Council’s readiness to act swiftly whenever environmental challenges threaten public safety. The administration says it will continue investing in equipment, manpower and strategic partnerships to improve emergency response capacity.

Hon. Olowa reaffirmed that the protection of lives, property and critical public infrastructure remains a top priority for his administration. He pledged that every decision concerning the flood response programme would be guided by the welfare of residents.

As the phased operations continue across Ibeju-Lekki, residents remain hopeful that the combined emergency interventions and long-term infrastructure improvements will significantly reduce flooding and promote a safer environment for communities throughout the local government area.
