The Lagos State Government has released a comprehensive traffic diversion plan in preparation for the upcoming emergency repairs on the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge.
EpeInsights reports that the repairs are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 6 and continue until Tuesday, September 23, 2025—a span of 110 days.
According to the official statement, the maintenance work will be carried out in eight phases.
Phases 1 to 4 will affect the inbound section of the bridge toward the Third Mainland Bridge from May 6 to July 14 (50 days), while Phases 5 to 8 will cover the outbound section from July 15 to September 23 (51 days).
To minimize disruptions during the repair period, the government has outlined alternative routes and diversions for motorists:
Diversion Plan for Inbound Repairs (Phases 1–4: May 6 – July 14)
- Local Diversion: Vehicles heading toward the Third Mainland Bridge will be diverted to a temporary lane 50 meters before the work zone and rejoin the main road 50 meters afterward.
- From Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Victoria Island:
- Use Ojota Slip Road → Ikorodu Road → Anthony → turn right by the Taxi Park ramp to Oshodi.
- Alternatively, use Town Planning Way to Anthony, then connect Gbagada and link the Third Mainland Bridge.
- From Mowe and Environs:
- Use Ojota Slip Road → Ikorodu Road → Funsho Williams Avenue → Eko Bridge.
- From Ikeja to Victoria Island:
- Go through Maryland → Ikorodu Road → Funsho Williams Avenue → Eko Bridge or Outer Marina.
- To Oshodi from Ikeja:
- Use Maryland → Ikorodu Road → Anthony (Taxi Park) → ramp to Oshodi.
Diversion Plan for Outbound Repairs (Phases 5–8: July 15 – September 23)
- Local Diversion: Vehicles leaving the Third Mainland Bridge via Oworonshoki will also be diverted 50 meters before and after the work zone.
- From Victoria Island to Ketu/Ikorodu:
- Take Eko Bridge → Funsho Williams Avenue → Ikorodu Road → Ojota/Ketu.
- From Victoria Island to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway:
- Use Eko Bridge → Funsho Williams Avenue → Ikorodu Road → Abiola Gardens Ramp.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr.Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the government’s commitment to managing traffic flow during the period. He assured residents that LASTMAofficers will be deployed along all affected routes to ensure smooth movement and minimize inconvenience to motorists.
“We appeal for patience and cooperation from the public as we carry out this essential infrastructure upgrade to ensure road safety and durability,” Osiyemi said.
Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly and make use of the alternative routes provided.
