Lagos is set to become the heartbeat of African football once again as it prepares to host an exciting two-week international pre-season tournament, bringing together top clubs from across the continent and beyond.
Epe Insights reports that in a show of unwavering support for youth and sports development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the organisers of the upcoming tournament – SuperSport Nigeria and Eko International Cup – during a courtesy visit to Lagos House, Marina.
The tournament promises to be a thrilling spectacle, featuring eight football clubs, including Nigerian giants Enyimba, Remo Stars, Shooting Stars, and Ikorodu City. They’ll be joined by international teams: Dadje FC (Benin Republic), SuperSport United (South Africa), Asante Kotoko (Ghana), and Ankaraspor (Turkey).
During the visit, the Governor was presented with the official match ball, jersey, and the tournament trophy – fittingly named the Sanwo-Olu Cup in recognition of his administration’s impactful contributions to sports and youth empowerment in the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the event as an important opportunity to empower young talents and foster community development through sports. “We are happy this international tournament is happening in Lagos. It opens up doors for young footballers and gives them a chance to shine on a bigger stage,” he said.
He also assured organisers of the state’s full support, promising that Lagos will offer a safe and welcoming environment for all participants and fans. “We’ll ensure the stadium is full. We want to see this succeed,” he added.
According to SuperSport Nigeria’s General Manager, Felix Awogu, the tournament will feature 15 high-stakes matches and will attract 22 international scouts. “If 20 players get picked by the scouts, it will be a huge win. We’re bringing hope to talented young people who dream of making it big in football,” he said.
The competition not only highlights the growing sports culture in Lagos but also aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader vision for youth engagement and infrastructural development.
With the countdown now officially on, all eyes will be on Lagos as it hosts this celebration of talent, teamwork, and opportunity – all under the banner of the Sanwo-Olu Cup.
