FISU Trials: 11 LASU Athletes Qualify to Represent Nigeria at World University Games in Germany

Lagos State University (LASU) continues to make headlines — not just in academics, but also in sports as eleven of its student-athletes qualified to represent Team Nigeria at the World University Games in Germany later this year.

EpeInsights reports that this follows their outstanding performance at the FISU Trials held at the University of Jos, Plateau State.

The week-long trials, which ran from Monday, April 7 to Friday, April 11, 2025, featured student-athletes from 46 universities across the country. LASU emerged as the top-performing institution, securing the highest number of qualifying athletes — 11 out of 29 available spots.

Breakdown of LASU’s Qualifiers:

  • Athletics: 2 female athletes
  • Table Tennis: 3 female and 1 male athlete
  • Judo: 2 male athletes
  • Taekwondo: 1 male athlete
  • Badminton: 1 male athlete
  • Tennis: 1 male athlete

Speaking on the achievement, Professor Simeon Dosunmu, Chairman of the LASU Sports Council and head of the delegation, praised the athletes for their discipline, resilience, and stellar representation of the university.

“No major sporting competition in Nigeria is complete without LASU,” he said. “Our athletes continue to raise the bar, and this milestone further cements LASU’s reputation as a powerhouse in both academics and sports.”

He also appreciated the unwavering support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, and the university’s management, for their consistent investment in sporting development.

The Director of Sports and Recreation, Dr. Segun Olawunmi described LASU’s qualification of 11 athletes — while some universities didn’t record a single qualification — as a testament to the institution’s commitment to excellence in sports.

“We are incredibly proud. These athletes have not only made LASU proud but will also represent Nigeria on a global stage. I’m confident they’ll deliver top performances in Germany,” he said.

The Deputy Director of Sports, Mr. Idowu Owoyemi, along with the coaching crew, played key roles in preparing the athletes for success.

Coming on the heels of LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, this sporting triumph adds yet another feather to the university’s cap, reinforcing its status as an institution of all-round excellence.
