Lagos Commissioner Urges Journalists to Embrace AI

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, made a compelling call for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism.

Epeinsights reports that Omotoso made the call at the just concluded 3rd Nigerian Media Leaders Summit in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Speaking through the Director of the Strategy Centre at the Ministry, Mr. Kayode Oyekanmi, the Commissioner highlighted AI’s transformative potential in shaping the future of journalism. He emphasized that adopting AI tools could greatly enhance the efficiency, reach, and relevance of news reporting in an increasingly digital world.

“Artificial intelligence is not here to replace journalists but to empower them,” he said. “AI can help us tell better stories, verify information faster, and make journalism more impactful and inclusive.”

The summit, themed “Market Squared: Turning Connections into Gold in the AI Age,” brought together top media executives, editors, and seasoned journalists from across Nigeria. Hosted at the Academy Suites and Hotel in Abeokuta, the two-day event was convened by Mr. Taiwo Obe, founder of The Journalism Clinic.

Discussions centered on how media organizations can leverage technology to improve storytelling, monetize content, and remain relevant in an era where digital disruption is the norm.

Participants engaged in thought-provoking sessions and workshops designed to bridge the gap between traditional journalism and emerging tech-driven practices. From AI-powered data analysis to audience engagement strategies, the summit was a melting pot of ideas and innovation.

The Commissioner’s remarks align with Lagos State’s broader vision of #AGreaterLagosRising, a development agenda focused on innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth. By urging the media to explore AI, Omotoso underscored the role of journalists as not just storytellers but also catalysts of change in the digital era.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, conversations like these reaffirm the urgent need for Nigerian journalists to stay ahead of the curve—and harness technology to keep the public informed, engaged, and empowered.
