Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has indicated strong interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State.

Epe Insights reports that Dr. Hamzat has commenced formal consultations with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

The consultations mark an early and strategic step in what is expected to be a competitive succession process within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a public statement, Hamzat confirmed that he has begun engaging key stakeholders across the APC structure in the state.

He noted that discussions with GAC members were sincere and insightful, focusing on the future direction and leadership needs of Lagos State.

According to him, the process is rooted in listening, learning, and collaboration aimed at building a more prosperous Lagos.

Hamzat emphasized that he is deliberately continuing consultations with a wider range of APC stakeholders before making a formal declaration.

Political observers note that engagement with the GAC is a critical step in Lagos politics, often serving as the formal gateway to governorship ambition.

Historically, every Lagos governor since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s era has passed through consultation with the council before emerging as candidates.

The development has already strengthened Hamzat’s visibility within the APC succession structure in the state.

Analysts describe the move as a major political signal that positions him as a leading contender ahead of the party’s internal processes.

His consultations are expected to expand across party leaders, stakeholders, and influential political blocs in Lagos State.

Hamzat’s possible governorship ambition also carries political implications for Lagos State’s zoning dynamics and internal party balance.

It is also significant for the Epe Division, which has continued to play a notable role in Lagos political structure and leadership emergence.

If successful, Hamzat would become one of the few governors with strong administrative ties to the Epe axis of the state.

Political watchers note that such an outcome would further strengthen the representation of Epe interests at the state executive level.

Former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who served between 2015 and 2019, remains the only recent governor closely associated with the Epe Division.

Stakeholders say Hamzat’s consultations signal the beginning of intense political realignment within the APC ahead of 2027.

Party insiders expect more consultations, alignments, and political negotiations in the coming months as the race gradually unfolds.
