The Lagos State Government has officially restricted all construction work within the state to between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Mondays to Saturdays, citing safety and environmental concerns.
EpeInsights reports that this announcement was made by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, in a statement released on Thursday through the Ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi.
Dr. Olumide said the new directive is part of a broader effort to prevent building collapses, reduce environmental hazards, and improve the quality of life for Lagos residents.
“This restriction must be strictly adhered to by all stakeholders in the construction sector. It is in the public interest and will be enforced by relevant government agencies,” he stated.
While acknowledging that construction schedules can be complex, the Commissioner explained that any requests to work beyond the designated hours would only be considered via formal applications. Such requests, he said, would be evaluated thoroughly before approval.
“Concessions may be granted but only after due diligence and evaluation,” he added.
The government is urging residents to support the enforcement of the policy by reporting violations. Dr. Olumide encouraged the public to “take ownership of their environment” and report any construction activity happening outside approved hours.
At a construction site in the Agodo-Egbe area of Alimosho Local Government, a worker identified as Musa Tola said the new policy could slow down projects but acknowledged its safety benefits.
“Sometimes we work overnight to meet deadlines, but safety is important. If the government is serious about this, we will have to adjust,” he said.
Mrs. Ifeoma Uche, a resident of Idimu, expressed relief at the new rule, noting the frequent noise disturbances caused by overnight construction.
“Some sites work all night, and the noise disturbs everyone. I think this will bring some sanity,” she said.
Lagos State has experienced several high-profile building collapses in recent years, prompting renewed calls for stricter regulatory oversight in the construction industry.
The government says enforcement of the new working hours will begin immediately.
