The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, has engaged residents and stakeholders in Ibeju-Lekki over proposed alternative routes for electricity transmission lines.
Epe Insights reports that the engagement focused on discussing route options for the project, which is intended to strengthen electricity supply and support the area’s growing economic and industrial activities.
Speaking at the meeting, Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, called on residents to cooperate with the relevant authorities to facilitate the project’s implementation.
Ogunleye stressed the importance of reliable electricity infrastructure to the development of Ibeju-Lekki, an area experiencing growing commercial and industrial activities.
He noted that improved power transmission infrastructure could help address electricity supply needs and support businesses and other economic activities across the area.
The commissioner also addressed concerns about possible demolitions, dismissing rumours of indiscriminate property removal. He assured residents that engagement with affected communities would remain part of the implementation process.
The meeting brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials and representatives of TCN to discuss the proposed routes and hear residents’ concerns.
An interactive session provided an opportunity for participants to seek clarification and share their views on the project.
The engagement underscored the importance of consultation between project authorities and host communities, particularly where infrastructure development may affect land use and residential areas.
For Ibeju-Lekki residents, discussions on alternative transmission routes are significant because route selection can influence project implementation, community impact and access to existing infrastructure.
The involvement of traditional rulers and community leaders also provides a channel for communicating residents’ concerns and helping authorities understand local conditions.
As consultations continue, residents will be looking for clear information on the selected routes, the project timeline and any measures required to address the concerns of potentially affected communities.
The state government and TCN are expected to continue engaging stakeholders as the planning process progresses. Details of the final route selection and implementation schedule were not provided in the information available for this report.
