A 40-foot container truck has crashed in Lagos, leaving one dead and five injured.
Epe Insights reports that one pedestrian died and five others were injured following a road accident at Cele Expressway in Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial city.
The Cele Expressway accident involved a 40-foot containerised truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles along the Cele Expressway corridor, inward Oshodi on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
The accident was confirmed in a statement released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s spokesperson, disclosed that preliminary findings from on-site investigations indicated that the heavy-duty truck, conveying two large containers, suffered a catastrophic brake failure while travelling at an excessive speed.
“The resulting loss of control led to the dislodgment of the containers, which subsequently collapsed onto 5 commercial buses and a pair of private vehicles, causing significant structural damage and human casualties,” Taofiq said.
LASTMA spokesperson revealed that one of the commercial bus drivers reportedly suffered multiple compound fractures to his arm and leg.
The other injured parties were quickly transported by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo medical facility for prompt treatment.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s General Manager, extended condolences to the bereaved family and conveyed his wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.
LASTMA’s General Manager seized the occasion to reiterate the imperative for articulated vehicle operators, especially those transporting containerised cargo, to subject their trucks to routine mechanical assessments, with particular attention to braking systems.
Bakare-Oki also admonished all motorists to comply with the speed limits on Lagos roads and the extant traffic laws established to safeguard public roads.
