LASTMA Issues Stern Warning to Commercial Bus Operators on Route Violations, Illegal Parking in Lagos

  • LASTMA has been instructed to step up enforcement against reckless driving and illegal practices, such as unauthorized parking and loading, which contribute to traffic congestion and public safety risks.
  • Commercial operators are required to use designated bus stops and terminals to avoid road obstruction.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong warning to commercial bus operators, particularly mini bus drivers known as ‘Korope,’ emphasizing the need for strict compliance with traffic regulations, especially regarding unauthorized route deviations.

This directive aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain order on Lagos roads and ensure the smooth flow of traffic across the city.

Epe Insights reports that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, instructed all ‘Korope’ operators to immediately stop using unauthorized routes, warning that violators would face strict legal consequences.

He also stated that LASTMA officials have been directed to intensify enforcement measures against reckless driving and illegal activities that disrupt urban mobility and contribute to traffic congestion.

Hon. Giwa further condemned the indiscriminate parking and unauthorized loading of passengers on public roads, highlighting that such practices worsen traffic conditions and pose risks to other road users. He stressed that all commercial bus operators must use designated bus stops and terminals to avoid obstructing traffic.

“Illegal parking and route violations have become a serious issue in Lagos, especially due to the actions of mini bus operators. These violations disrupt traffic flow and endanger public safety. LASTMA has been instructed to ensure strict compliance with traffic laws and to penalize offenders accordingly,” Hon. Giwa stated.

He added that adhering to designated routes is also crucial for security reasons, as it helps deter criminals who exploit commercial vehicles, particularly ‘Korope,’ for illegal activities.

LASTMA urges all road users, especially commercial transport operators, to cooperate with traffic authorities by following regulations and promoting responsible driving habits.

The agency remains committed to ensuring a safe, organized, and efficient transportation system for all Lagos residents.

For reports on traffic violations, emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or road accidents, the public is encouraged to contact LASTMA through its toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
