The Lagos State Government has taken a bold leap toward its smart city ambition with the launch of a 24/7 digital traffic enforcement system.

EpeInsights reports that the move is set to transform how the city manages safety, mobility and governance in the digital age.

The initiative, unveiled during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, is a key part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s wider push to harness technology for public good making the state safer, smarter, and more business-friendly.

Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Olatubosun Alake, who made the announcement, described the new traffic system as a major milestone.

According to him, the phased rollout of intelligent video surveillance across Lagos will boost not just traffic regulation but also security, aligning physical infrastructure with digital solutions.

“A truly digitised city requires a seamless blend of physical and digital systems,” Alake said.

“The Metrofibre Project, which aims to deploy 6,000km of optic fibre cables and ducts, is a game-changer in expanding connectivity across Lagos.”

Beyond traffic management, the Commissioner noted that the state is laying a solid digital foundation through enterprise architecture that will digitise government operations, enhance public-private partnerships, and streamline service delivery.Lagos Unveils 24/7 Digital Traffic Surveillance, Pushing Smart City Vision Forward

He highlighted ongoing digital governance improvements, including upgrades to the Lagos State Government website, the ICT Request Platform, and the Oracle-based management systems.

A new digital services portal will also soon go live providing Lagosians with easy access to essential public services from a single hub.

As Lagos embraces next-generation technology, plans are also underway to roll out artificial intelligence tools.

These include AI-powered chatbots, integration of AI into digital governance services, and the creation of AI guidelines to encourage responsible innovation across the state.

The Commissioner also addressed cybersecurity, revealing that Lagos successfully repelled two attempted data breaches in the past year.

He credited this to the deployment of 109 certified Data Protection Officers across ministries and agencies, a move that cements Lagos’ reputation as a national leader in data compliance and protection.

“This isn’t just about modernising systems, it’s about protecting lives, powering economic growth, and empowering every resident through technology.” Alake said.
