Lagos Empowers 1,200 Women in Hard-to-Reach Communities with Financial Literacy

The Lagos State Government has empowered 1,200 women across 12 underserved communities with financial literacy skills.

EpeInsights gathered that the latest outreach, held in the riverine community of Oko-Agbon in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, marked the grand finale of the state’s Women’s Financial Inclusion Initiative.

The initiative, led by the Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in collaboration with Africa Human Capacity Development Plus (Africa HCD Plus), is part of the state’s broader strategy to build human capital and create economic opportunities for women in marginalized areas.

Speaking at the event, Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Olayemi Sarunmi, highlighted the significance of financial independence for women.

“When women are financially independent, the community thrives, the economy grows, and development becomes sustainable,” she said.

Over the past year, the programme has provided financial education and access to services in 11 other hard-to-reach communities across Lagos, including Bariga, Badagry, Ibeju Lekki, Epe, and Ifako-Ijaiye.

Partner organizations like Opay, Cowrywise, LASHMA, LASSRA, and NIMC also played a vital role in the programme’s success, helping women access digital wallets, savings platforms, and essential health and identity registration services.

Ms. Halima Mohammed of Africa HCD Plus praised the Lagos State Government’s commitment under its THEMES+ Agenda to ensure inclusive development.

“This project proves that when we invest in women—especially those often overlooked—we unlock immense potential for growth,” she said.

As part of the engagement, 120 women were enrolled in the Ilera Eko Health Scheme, granting them access to free healthcare for one year at accredited facilities.

The traditional ruler of the Oko-Agbon community, Oba Monsuru Oladega, expressed appreciation on behalf of the community, urging the government to replace the aging wooden bridge with a concrete structure and speed up the inauguration of the area’s public hospital.

For many of the women, the training has not only boosted their financial knowledge but also their confidence and entrepreneurial mindset.

With this initiative, Lagos continues to lead the way in promoting inclusive growth, ensuring that no woman, no matter her location, is left behind.
