Thousands of app-based transport workers in Lagos are gearing up for a citywide strike on May 1, 2025, citing exploitative practices by top ride-hailing platforms Uber, Bolt, Lagride, inDrive, and Rida.

EpeInsights gathered that the 24-hour shutdown, organised by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), will see an estimated 5,000 drivers log off their apps in protest.

Their demands include fairer wages, reduced commissions, and better working conditions in an increasingly challenging economic environment.

“Companies continue to rake in profits while drivers struggle with low fares, high commissions, and rising fuel costs,” said Steven Iwindoye, AUATON’s spokesperson.

“We’ve exhausted all channels of dialogue, this strike is a last resort.”

Drivers say they’re burdened with commission rates as high as 30%, while some trips earn as little as ₦1,200 for 10 kilometres barely enough to cover fuel and maintenance.

Timed for International Workers’ Day, the strike aligns with a broader global conversation around the rights of gig economy workers. Similar protests have recently been held in the United States and South Africa, where ride-hailing drivers are also demanding systemic reforms.

AUATON has vowed to push for a negotiation framework post-strike, engaging labour organisations to secure long-term improvements for Nigeria’s digital transport workforce.

“This isn’t just a one-day protest,” the union said.

“It’s a movement for dignity, equity, and recognition of the people who power our cities.”
