Residents of Epe Local Government gathered at the council secretariat as health authorities officially launched activities marking the 2026 World Hypertension Day.

Epe Insights reports that the programme was organised by Lagos State Health District III in collaboration with Epe Local Government, with the theme “Controlling Hypertension Together,” aimed at raising awareness and improving early detection of high blood pressure among residents.

Health officials at the event revealed that about 57 percent of residents within Epe Local Government are currently living with hypertension, describing the figure as a major public health concern requiring urgent attention.

They noted that many cases remain undiagnosed due to limited routine health checks, stressing the importance of regular screening and lifestyle modifications to reduce risks associated with the condition.

The campaign featured free blood pressure screening for residents who attended the event, with medical personnel stationed at various points within the secretariat to attend to participants.

Beneficiaries also received free medications where necessary, alongside professional counseling and health education on managing and preventing hypertension.

Medical experts advised residents to adopt healthier lifestyles, including reduced salt intake, regular exercise, stress management, and consistent medical checkups.

They further explained that hypertension is often referred to as a “silent killer” due to its ability to progress without obvious symptoms until complications arise.

Officials emphasized that early detection remains key to preventing severe health complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

The council leadership reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery and ensuring that health awareness campaigns reach all communities across the local government area.

Community members who participated in the screening expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to public health in Epe.

Health workers also used the opportunity to educate residents on the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and avoiding harmful lifestyle habits that contribute to high blood pressure.

The 2026 World Hypertension Day campaign is expected to continue across various communities within Epe Local Government through outreach programmes and sensitization activities.

Authorities stated that sustained public health education remains a priority in reducing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases within the state.
