The Alara of Ilara Kingdom in Epe Division of Lagos State, HRM Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, has officially announced the cancellation of the 2026 Ojude-Oba Alara Festival following the death of the Omola of Odomola Kingdom, HRM Oba Adeshina Sulaimon Adebowale.
Epe Insights reports that the annual cultural festival, which was scheduled to hold on the second day of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, was suspended as a mark o
f honour and respect for the late monarch who passed away on May 13, 2026.
In an official communiqué issued from the royal palace on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the Alara of Ilara-Epe expressed deep sadness over the passing of the revered traditional ruler, describing him as a royal brother, a peaceful leader, and a respected custodian of Yoruba culture and traditions.
According to the monarch, the decision to cancel the festival was reached after extensive consultations with members of the Alara-in-Council in recognition of the cordial relationship that existed between Ilara Kingdom and Odomola Kingdom.
Oba Ogunsanwo noted that the late Oba Adeshina Sulaimon Adebowale made significant contributions toward the preservation of cultural heritage and the promotion of peace and unity within Epe Division and beyond.

He described the deceased monarch as a humble and wise traditional ruler whose dedication to the progress of his people earned him admiration across various communities.
The Alara appealed to indigenes, residents, friends, and well-wishers of Ilara Kingdom to accept the cancellation in good faith despite the extensive preparations already made for this year’s celebration.
He also encouraged families and residents who had invited guests for the festival to continue celebrating the Ileya festivities peacefully within their homes and communities while maintaining the spirit of unity and hospitality associated with the kingdom.
While expressing regret over the cancellation, the monarch assured the people of Ilara Kingdom that the festival would return in a bigger and more colourful form in 2027 by the grace of God.
Oba Ogunsanwo further urged all sons and daughters of Ilara Kingdom, both at home and in the diaspora, to remain united and committed to the continued development and progress of the kingdom despite the unfortunate situation.
He also offered prayers for the repose of the late monarch’s soul and prayed for strength and comfort for the royal family, the people of Odomola Kingdom, and the entire traditional institution during the mourning period.
The Ojude-Oba Alara Festival remains one of the prominent cultural celebrations in Epe Division, bringing together indigenes, tourists, cultural enthusiasts, and traditional groups in celebration of heritage, unity, and community development.
