The streets of Lagos Island came alive on Sunday as the 2025 Lagos Fanti Carnival dazzled residents and visitors with a brilliant showcase of colour, rhythm, and heritage.
EpeInsights reports that the event was organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Brazilian Descendants Association and other cultural groups.
The carnival offered a vibrant fusion of Afro-Brazilian traditions and contemporary creativity.
Starting from Old Defence Road and culminating at the iconic JK Randle Centre, the carnival procession featured flamboyant costumes, traditional drumming, energetic dances, and captivating performances by local talents—drawing crowds that cheered and danced along the route.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the carnival as more than just entertainment.
“This event is a vital bridge between our rich cultural history and the creative future we’re building,” she said. “It reflects the values of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda, particularly in driving tourism, empowering youth, and fostering community revival.”
The carnival’s Afro-Brazilian elements pay homage to the returnee Brazilian descendants who contributed significantly to Lagos’ architectural and cultural evolution. Beyond the spectacle, the event also served as a platform for heritage preservation, economic activity, and youth engagement.
As celebrations continue into the evening, the Lagos Fanti Carnival 2025 reaffirms Lagos’ position as a cultural powerhouse—uniting diverse communities through shared traditions and collective joy.
