The Executive Chairman of Eredo Local Council Development Area, Hon. Ismail Monsuru Akinloye, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving the council’s cultural heritage while unlocking its tourism and economic potential.
Epe Insights reports that the Special Adviser on Tourism, Mr. Adetola Onabajo, alongside the Head of the Tourism Unit, Miss Alabi Sikirat Iyabo, conducted an inspection visit to the historic Sungbo’s Eredo and the famous Odo Aiye stream in Imokun.
The visit formed part of the council’s ongoing efforts to identify, preserve, and promote heritage sites capable of attracting local and international visitors.
During the inspection, Mr. Onabajo described Sungbo’s Eredo as one of Africa’s most significant historical landmarks and an enduring symbol of the ingenuity of past generations.
He noted that the ancient earthwork remains one of Nigeria’s most valuable cultural assets, with the potential to attract historians, researchers, tourists, and heritage enthusiasts from across the world.
According to him, preserving the historic monument will not only protect the area’s rich history but also create opportunities for tourism development and economic growth.
Mr. Onabajo stressed that proper conservation, awareness, and investment are essential to unlocking the site’s full tourism potential.
He also visited the renowned Odo Aiye stream in Imokun, describing it as an important natural and cultural resource within Eredo LCDA.
He explained that the stream has served generations of residents as a dependable natural water source while contributing to the area’s environmental sustainability.
According to the Special Adviser, Odo Aiye also plays an important role in preserving biodiversity and supporting the ecological balance of the surrounding communities.
He noted that beyond its environmental value, the stream remains deeply connected to the cultural identity and history of the Imokun community.
Mr. Onabajo called for greater efforts to protect the stream from environmental degradation to ensure future generations continue to benefit from its resources.
He said preserving natural attractions is as important as protecting historical monuments because both contribute significantly to sustainable tourism.
The tourism adviser explained that heritage conservation creates opportunities for education, cultural exchange, research, recreation, and community development.
He further stated that Eredo LCDA possesses numerous historical and natural attractions capable of boosting the local economy through responsible tourism.
According to him, these unique assets can generate employment opportunities, encourage investment, and promote local businesses when properly developed.
Mr. Onabajo reaffirmed that the administration of Hon. Ismail Monsuru Akinloye remains committed to preserving the council’s cultural treasures for the benefit of present and future generations.
He added that the council will continue collaborating with government agencies, heritage experts, traditional institutions, and development partners to safeguard these important sites.
The Head of the Tourism Unit, Miss Alabi Sikirat Iyabo, also participated in the inspection, supporting efforts to document and evaluate the tourism potential of the locations visited.
