Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has commenced a strategic drainage clearance and canal maintenance project aimed at reducing flooding risks ahead of the rainy season.
Epe Insights reports that the initiative officially began along the Gbetu–Olowopopo–Ogunfayo axis, with senior government officials in attendance to flag off the exercise.
The project is part of the council’s proactive environmental management efforts. It is designed to improve water flow and protect communities from seasonal flooding.
The Executive Chairman, Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, was represented at the flag-off by the Secretary to the Local Government, Adewale Adebanjo.
Officials supervised the commencement of the drainage clearance exercise. The inspection marked the start of intensified environmental maintenance activities.
The intervention covers key drainage channels and canals. It aims to ensure free water passage across flood-prone areas.

Authorities say the project is part of a broader flood prevention strategy. It is expected to reduce waterlogging and property damage.
The initiative represents the fifth phase of canal intervention projects in the area. It reflects continuity in environmental infrastructure development.
The exercise is being coordinated by the Supervising Councillor for Environment, Temitope Sofwan Ogungbo.
Ogungbo noted that the project is targeted at improving environmental safety. He emphasized the importance of regular drainage maintenance.
Residents in affected areas are expected to benefit directly. Improved drainage will enhance sanitation and mobility.

The council stressed that the initiative is preventive rather than reactive. Early action is aimed at avoiding flooding challenges.
Community-based environmental strategies are also being promoted. Residents are encouraged to support the cleanup exercise.
Officials reiterated the importance of keeping waterways clear. Blocked drains are a major cause of flooding in urban areas.
The local government reaffirmed its commitment to infrastructure maintenance. Seasonal preparedness remains a key priority.

Stakeholders say the project demonstrates responsive governance. It reflects attention to environmental and public safety concerns.
The drainage clearance is expected to continue across multiple locations. Further phases will cover additional communities.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with officials. Proper waste disposal is critical to sustaining the effort.
The council assured that monitoring will continue throughout the rainy season. Rapid response teams may also be deployed if needed.
