The National Space Council has approved the renaming of the Centre for Space Transport and Propulsion in Epe, Lagos State, to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Centre for Space Transport and Propulsion. The decision was reached during a meeting of the National Space Council held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

Epe Insights reports that the centre, operated by the National Space Research and Development Agency, will now bear the name of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of his administration’s support for the advancement of Nigeria’s space science and technology sector.

The approval was announced following the successful meeting of the Council chaired on behalf of the President by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The meeting reviewed developments in Nigeria’s space programme and outlined strategies to strengthen the country’s capacity in satellite technology and space research.

The renamed facility is located in Epe and serves as a key research hub for propulsion technology and space transport systems in Nigeria. The centre plays a strategic role in the country’s efforts to develop indigenous space capabilities and expand scientific innovation.

Officials of the National Space Research and Development Agency described the renaming as a major milestone for Nigeria’s space programme. According to the agency’s leadership, the recognition underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening research institutions and advancing technological development.

They noted that the decision is expected to boost the visibility of the centre and attract greater investment, partnerships, and research opportunities within the global space community. The development is also seen as a morale boost for scientists and engineers working within the country’s space sector.

Industry observers say the centre’s strategic location in Epe positions it as an important facility for propulsion research and future launch technology initiatives. The renaming further highlights the growing role of Nigeria in Africa’s evolving space science landscape
