EpeInsights gathered that the Lagos State Governor while speaking at the ECOWAS Court of Justice’s two-day sensitisation event at Eko Hotels and Suites, emphasized that access to justice shouldn’t be a privilege—but a right for all, regardless of background or social status.

“This gathering reflects our shared commitment to making justice accessible and responsive,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“Justice must not only exist in law books or distant courtrooms—it must reach every citizen, especially the most vulnerable.”

The event brought together ECOWAS judges, legal professionals, and civil rights groups to discuss ways to deepen public understanding of the ECOWAS Court and strengthen regional legal cooperation.

Sanwo-Olu also called on ECOWAS to set the pace globally in human rights protection and legal equity, adding that “true peace and prosperity in the region will only come when justice is a lived reality, not an abstract ideal.”

ECOWAS Court President, Justice Ricardo Gonçalves, echoed the governor’s sentiments, noting that justice must not be seen as a luxury for the elite.

“Justice hidden is justice denied,” he said. “From cities to remote villages, every citizen deserves fair access to the law.”

Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, also stressed the importance of judicial collaboration across borders.

She highlighted how the ECOWAS Court plays a vital role in ensuring consistency in legal interpretation, especially in tackling regional issues like human rights violations, cross-border crimes, and corruption.

With Lagos hosting the event, Sanwo-Olu noted that the state embodies the ECOWAS spirit—diverse, dynamic, and forward-thinking.

He urged participants to use the forum as a springboard to build stronger ties and more effective legal institutions across the region.

“By working together, we can turn the ideals of equity and justice into everyday realities,” he said.
