Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the emerging political coalition against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections as a nonstarter, declaring that it will ultimately fail.

EpeInsights reports that the Governor while speaking with journalists and political stakeholders in Lagos, dismissed recent moves by some opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Senate President David Mark to form a new political alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a desperate ploy aimed at distracting President Tinubu from his reform agenda.

“Nigerians will never go back to Egypt,” Sanwo-Olu said, referencing the biblical metaphor for regression.

“The aim is to distract the Commander-in-Chief and derail the visible gains we are beginning to experience. But President Tinubu knows the game. He will not take the bait.”

The Governor noted that the so-called coalition, which also includes political heavyweights such as former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, lacks ideological cohesion and is instead fueled by personal grievances.

He argued that Nigerians have begun to feel the impact of President Tinubu’s reforms, citing major initiatives such as the stabilization of the foreign exchange market, the launch of the national Student Loan Scheme, improved federal allocation to states following fuel subsidy removal, renewed infrastructure projects, tax reforms, rising oil output, and a reviewed national minimum wage.

“President Tinubu is not only a builder of people but a visionary with tangible achievements nationwide,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“No serious person should be distracted by what the ADC or any coalition is orchestrating. The results are there. Nigerians can see the difference, and history is already on his side.”

The Lagos Governor said the President remains focused on governance and delivering his mandate under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and that any attempt to derail him through political theatrics would be ineffective.

Commenting on the character of the coalition, Sanwo-Olu echoed sentiments from the presidency, which has described the group as a “gathering of political desperadoes and internally displaced politicians” lacking a clear agenda beyond resentment of President Tinubu.

“They have nothing but bitterness to offer. What binds them is not any noble ideology but an unhealthy obsession with Tinubu. That alliance will run out of steam,” he asserted.

Asked what advice he would offer the President at this critical time, Sanwo-Olu was emphatic: “Stay the course. Millions of Nigerians across political divides who truly understand the complexity of reviving a distressed economy are with him.”

He added that the President’s leadership has already brought significant progress and that efforts should remain focused on deepening reforms and building a stronger, more inclusive nation.

As political rhetoric around 2027 intensifies, the Governor urged Nigerians to stay focused on development and ignore divisive narratives.

“Let’s remain calm, disciplined, and confident in the President’s ability to lead. We’ve come too far to look back,” Sanwo-Olu concluded.
