Otunba TJ Abass Steps Down As Coordinator of Kayokayo Committee

Otunba TJ Abass has stepped down as Coordinator of the Kayokayo Committee.

Epe Insights reports that the Aremo of Epe Land and the publisher of Eko Hot Blog, a Lagos-based news outlet, Otunba TJ Abass, has stepped down from his office as the coordinator of the iconic Kayokayo Committee with immediate effect.

The Aremo of Epe Land stepped down from his role in a letter dated February 5, 2025, which was directed to His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, the Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom.

In the letter sighted by this reporter, Abass said his decision to step down as the coordinator of the iconic Kayokayo Committee is “premised on personal priorities”.

Otunba said it was a “great honor and privilege to share the stage with all the committee’s committed and dedicated members.”

Commending the committee, Abass said together they “raised the banner with numerous success stories that have placed our community on a global pedestal.”

“Our crowdfunding strategy is one of our crown jewels, which has provided us with the financial resources to achieve our lofty goals and aspirations.

“As of today, we have a total of $18 million, of which $15 million is in fixed deposit for our future project, Kayokayo Village,” the Aremo of Epe Land noted in his resignation letter.

Reminiscing on his role as the Coordinator of Kayokayo Committee, Otunba said the experience allowed him to learn from the wealth of knowledge of previous leaders and coordinators.

While admitting that the goals of Kayokayo Village may not be possible at this moment, Abass noted that “it is a goal within reach in the near future.”

The Aremo of Epe Land thanked the Committee “for being the wind” beneath his wings during his brief time as the coordinator of Kayokayo Committee, this was even as he wished the “committee and future coordinators success in their efforts to promote our rich cultural heritage.”

Meanwhile, Epe Insights reports that the Kayo-Kayo festival is an annual religious and cultural state festival celebrated by the descendants of Oba Kosoko for the historical arrival of King Kosoko to Epe in the year 1851. Kayo-Kayo which literary means “eating to satisfaction”, is known in the Epe community of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.

The festival is usually observed during the first month of the Islamic calendar in commemoration of ‘Yaom-al Ashura’ the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, which is about a month after the Muslim festival of Eid-El-Kabir.

The Kayo-Kayo festival has grown to become a veritable platform to advance, develop, and promote the local economy, discuss the socio-economic challenges of the community, and most significantly, to propagate their rich cultural heritage.
