The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) has extended its community outreach to the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area with a sensitisation programme focused on safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
Epe Insights reports that the engagement, held under the theme “Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene,” brought together residents, community leaders, borehole drillers, water vendors, tanker operators, and other stakeholders to promote access to safe and hygienic water sources.
Welcoming participants, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman, Conference 57 League of Chairmen, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa stressed the urgent need to regulate water consumption in the area, noting that water safety remains critical to public health.

Hon. Olowa commended Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for prioritising water regulation across the state and urged stakeholders to adhere strictly to the guidelines discussed during the programme.
In her address, the Executive Secretary of LASWARCO, Mrs Oluwabukola Khadijah Adeyemo, warned that despite Lagos being surrounded by water, most sources are unsafe for direct consumption due to contaminants, salt intrusion, and poor handling.

She explained that indiscriminate borehole drilling and untreated water increase the risk of diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhoea, particularly in fast-growing communities like Ibeju-Lekki.
“This programme is about closing the gap between awareness and compliance,” Adeyemo said, adding that poorly managed water poses a silent threat to public health and the environment.

She emphasised household water treatment, proper storage, and hygiene, while encouraging collaboration between regulators, service providers, and communities for sustainable water access.
The event also featured contributions from the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Water Corporation, Hon. Bode Olaniyan, health officials, and community development representatives.

LASWARCO reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that water production and distribution across Lagos State meet approved safety standards.
