A Lagos Mobile Court has sentenced two individuals to three months in prison for their involvement in a violent and coordinated mob attack on operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). The assault occurred while the LASTMA officials were performing their lawful duties.
EpeInsights learnt that the incident took place on Monday, April 7, 2025, in the area of LASTMA’s Central District (Zone 9) near Victoria Island.
The altercation was sparked when LASTMA officers apprehended a white commercial minibus, SMK 742 YJ (locally known as ‘korope’), for obstructing traffic near the Mekwen Bridge, heading towards Flag House.
In a blatant act of defiance, the driver of the minibus rallied other commercial vehicle operators, who arrived on the scene in two additional minibuses (GGE 995 YF). Together, they launched a violent and premeditated attack on the LASTMA officials.
The confrontation escalated quickly, but a swift response by security personnel led to the arrest of two suspects, who were immediately charged before the Lagos Mobile Court in Oshodi.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, voiced strong support for the court’s decision, praising the ruling as an important step in deterring further attacks against traffic enforcement officers.
He emphasized that the verdict sends a clear message to those who routinely flout traffic regulations, particularly commercial vehicle operators.
“This ruling underscores our zero-tolerance policy for any form of aggression against LASTMA officials,” Bakare-Oki stated. “We are committed to ensuring that our officers can carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or violence.”
LASTMA promised to continue to stand firm in its mission to enforce traffic laws and maintain order on Lagos roadways and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the safety and smooth movement of all road users across the state.
