In response to rising concerns over flooding in parts of Ibeju-Lekki linked to the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road construction, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Sunday embarked on an urgent inspection tour of the affected communities.
EpeInsights learnt that the Chairman visited Iberekodo, Museyo, and Eleko, where he assessed the extent of damage and directly engaged with residents who have been grappling with rising water levels in recent weeks.
Residents lamented the worsening flooding situation, which they attributed to poor drainage planning around the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project.
Hon. Olowa confirmed these fears, stating that the blockage of natural waterways due to the ongoing road construction was the root cause of the flooding.
“The contractor must prioritize the construction of effective drainage channels to redirect water into the swamp areas,” Hon. Olowa stressed, adding that urgent technical solutions are required to prevent further environmental and infrastructural damage.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Akadiri Ayorinde, said the Chairman assured residents that the local government would escalate the matter to the Federal Ministry of Works through the office of the Honourable Minister and the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, in a bid to enforce compliance and ensure the project’s environmental safeguards are upheld.
The Chairman also promised to provide relief materials to the affected communities, noting that the council is committed to protecting lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure.
“We will not leave our people to suffer. Intervention is on the way—both in immediate relief and in long-term drainage solutions,” he said.
This marks the second consecutive day of flood-related inspections by Hon. Olowa, who has intensified his administration’s response efforts as the rains peak in coastal Lagos.
