The Federal Government has officially commenced construction of Sections 3A and 3B of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, covering a 65-kilometre stretch in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.
EpeInsights reports that tge Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, once completed, is expected to transform transportation, boost tourism, and enhance connectivity between coastal states with Lagos as its entry point.
The Minister of Works, Chief Dave Umahi, performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, with Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, representing President Bola Tinubu.
The sections form part of the ambitious 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road — a signature infrastructure project of the Tinubu administration.
Umahi explained that the road, like other segments of the highway, will be built using a reinforced concrete pavement system to ensure durability and long-term cost efficiency.
He praised President Tinubu’s leadership and vision, describing him as a “national hero” for championing infrastructure development in remote and underserved areas.
“Only someone like Asiwaju can turn a dense forest into a growing city. This project is proof of his commitment to economic recovery and prosperity for Nigerians,” Umahi said.
The minister also urged local communities along the route to support the contractors and ensure a smooth construction process.
“The contractors work like lightning. With the right support from the host communities, this road will be completed faster than you expect,” he added.

In a speech delivered on his behalf, President Tinubu described the coastal highway as more than just a road — calling it a major economic enabler and a connector of cultures, businesses, and regions.
“This project will boost job creation, support small businesses, and enhance national integration. It is a pathway to long-term independence, not just politically but economically,” the president said.
He added that government agencies will continue to provide small business support in the form of grants, soft loans, and professional guidance to help citizens maximize the opportunities created by the project.
Federal Controller of Works in Cross River, Engr. Olayinka Onafuye, assured the public of strict adherence to quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.
